Scientibs Times is a pun on scientists and “tibs,” a Filipino colloquial term for lesbians. The newsletter aims to highlight issues and developments about queer people in science as well as put a spotlight on queer scientists.

It’s the brainchild of Shai Panela, a science communicator and former science journalist who has written for Asian Scientist Magazine and Philippine news site Rappler. Writing the newsletter with her is Purple Romero, a fact-checker and teaching assistant based in Hong Kong. Both of them have reported extensively about health, climate change and gender issues.
